U.K. VAT registration, done right

Whether you’ve crossed the threshold or want to register voluntarily, we prepare and submit your HMRC VAT application — and tell you honestly whether you actually need it.

Overview

VAT registration is mandatory once your turnover passes the HMRC threshold, and optional before it. The right choice depends on your customers and costs — we advise on both and handle the application. HMRC makes the final decision on every registration.

Questions

Good to know

Do I have to register for VAT?

Only once your taxable turnover passes the HMRC threshold, or if you choose to register voluntarily. We check your position first — the threshold is set by HMRC and changes.

Can a non-resident company register?

Yes. A U.K. company can register for VAT regardless of where its owners live. HMRC decides each application.

When must I register for VAT?

Registration becomes compulsory once taxable turnover crosses the U.K. threshold in any rolling twelve-month period. Businesses established outside the U.K. that make taxable supplies here can face a nil threshold, so overseas founders should check rather than assume.

Should I register voluntarily?

Sometimes. If you sell mainly to VAT-registered businesses, registering lets you reclaim input VAT and looks more established. If you sell to consumers, it effectively adds 20% to your price. It is a commercial decision worth thinking through.

Can a non-resident director register the company?

Yes. The company registers, not you personally. HMRC may ask more questions about your U.K. business presence, and we help you answer them.

What is Making Tax Digital?

HMRC requires VAT records to be kept digitally and returns filed through compatible software. Spreadsheets emailed to an accountant no longer satisfy it, so we make sure your bookkeeping is set up correctly from the start.

How long does registration take?

Often a few weeks, longer where HMRC runs additional checks — which is more common for overseas-controlled companies. Apply before you need the number rather than after.
